    Thanks for the post.  However, the problem magically
disappeared.  I was hoping it was a glitch, because I had always
thought that background images were kind of "sacred", and were
always supposed to look right.  Of course, a couple hundred lens
flares might change the appearance of a bkg image.  However, in my
case, there weren't any objects anywhere close to where the dark
banding was occurring.
    Some things aren't meant to be easily understood.
